[INTERNATIONAL] Hongrie

Past saturday I visited the owner of the only known Belouga that was preserved in her original condition. That means : no GRP coating, no lead keel, no modifications on hull . Anyway, she has a marconi rig, like all hungarian belougas. The boat looks even better on water then on photos . I´ve seen until now these boats only on pics, and I was really amazed of her lines: a throughout fine boat.
A few infos to the history of hungarian Belougas: The building plans were imported to Hungary in 1956 by two chemists. They were friends, and they had the same shipwright build for each of them a Belouga . The boats were launched in 1957 called Szoma and Boreas. Both of them are still existing ( GRP coated and with led keel), one is sailing the other is docked. This one that I sighted was too built in 1957 by an unknown shipwright. After that there were built a few other boats, even by amateurs, like the students and a teacher of a piarist college. This one was called : Fiastyuk, she dosn´t exist any more. Now I know about 12 Belougas that are still sailing.
I decided to build a Belouga in the future , but before I have to sell my present boat. I´m working now together with a naval architekt in order to make a few modifications. I would make a new construction of the centerboard, that would be a hydrodynamically foiled one with some lead ballast in it, staying in a closed centerboard case that would be much less obtrusive than the original. I want a shorter cabin, a larger cockpit, a V berth moved forward and a third quarter berth aft. Sitting banks in the cockpit would be raised to deck level. She would get a yawl rig as well. I´d build her in larch with the strip planking method glued and finished with epoxi, clear varnished. Ok, it won´t be a Belouga any more but I think a bit more up to date, preserving in main the looks and good qualities of the original.

First of all I must agree with your father, and, as I wrote too in my mail it won´t be a belouga any more and I do not intend to call her so. Why these modifications ? I don´t know how far are you following the trends of the world of wooden boatbuilding, but you can see that a lot of famous designs of great boat designers have a revival, but they will be all newly concipied, drown and built to modern standards, preserving as much from the original as possible. Only two significant examples: Haven 12-1/2 and Flatfish, both originally famous designs of N Herreshoff , now overworked by other designers. I could tell about countless others. Especially to Belouga: she is a great boat in her original form, but there are a few items in her construction that are -mildly said- not any more up to date. First of all the centerboard. These centerboards were typical for that time, today I think we can make it better ( at least more comfortable)
About the rig: yawl rig is my own preference, I don´t think I could persuade anyone in Hungary to mount it on a boat. It´s a very versatile rig, highy appreciated by americans, not really known and beloved in Europe. Most important feature of it: you can face the wind effortless any time in order to take a reef, do anything in the bow, an so on- very useful when you sail single handed. ( not long ago designed Francois Vivier a fine little yawl rigged boat, the “Jewel”) Sitting benches raised to deck level: Belouga is a shallow hull, in order to make possible a self bailing cockpit and to get a quarter berth under aft deck I´m forced to raise the benches. No doubt, it looks well on other boats, for ex. the “Wianno Senior” it should work on a belouga too. A larger cockpit is essential for me, sleeping outside must be possible. After all, we spend most time of sailing in the cockpit, cooking ,eating, sunbathing happens there; deckhouse is more a shelter for emergency and sudden bad weather. Planking method: four broad solid wood side planks is really anything else but up to date, there are much better methods that result in a stiffer, better looking hull that needs almost no maintance.
You might ask why do I want to build belouga ,when there are countless new designs for wood and plywood. In today´s plastik terror I think we need affordable hand-built fine wooden boats , but it is very difficult to make people accept a new boat type ( hungarians are especially conservative). A modified belouga – due to the history of the original in Hungary- could even be such a boat. It´s maybe a wild fantasy, but I can imagine a revival of it. Please give your father my honest regards, and tell him, I think modifying a boat is not a crime, it is more honouring the designer, and it is better to help a great design to a revival – even with modifications- then let it die forever. If no new boats will be built, the design will slowly die!
By the way, have you studied the pdf drawing of my “semi –belouga” that I sent together with the photos, and what is your own opinion about it? ( now wihout yawl rig but just with the original houari)
I´m going on to research about hungarian belougas, If i find interesting infos I´ll send them to you. I have already a few old photos about original ones, I´attache them to a following e-mail.

I told you already that I´m working together with a naval architect about some modifications. We now make the new centerboard. He has digitalised the plans, and he says, according to his calculations the Belouga shows a tendecy of lee helm instead of weather helm. I was talking to an belouga owner here, he said, the boat shows really a bit of lee helm until about 1.5 B, by stronger winds goes over to weather helm. Would you please tell me about your observations with the houari rig. By the way, a yawl rig won´t be possible without moving the mast forwards and use a bowsprit, so I refused to it, I´ll remain by the original.
