[INTERNATIONAL] Hongrie

Past saturday I visited the owner of the only known Belouga that was preserved in her original condition. That means : no GRP coating, no lead keel, no modifications on hull . Anyway, she has a marconi rig, like all hungarian belougas. The boat looks even better on water then on photos . I´ve seen until now these boats only on pics, and I was really amazed of her lines: a throughout fine boat.
A few infos to the history of hungarian Belougas: The building plans were imported to Hungary in 1956 by two chemists. They were friends, and they had the same shipwright build for each of them a Belouga . The boats were launched in 1957 called Szoma and Boreas. Both of them are still existing ( GRP coated and with led keel), one is sailing the other is docked. This one that I sighted was too built in 1957 by an unknown shipwright. After that there were built a few other boats, even by amateurs, like the students and a teacher of a piarist college. This one was called : Fiastyuk, she dosn´t exist any more. Now I know about 12 Belougas that are still sailing.
I decided to build a Belouga in the future , but before I have to sell my present boat. I´m working now together with a naval architekt in order to make a few modifications. I would make a new construction of the centerboard, that would be a hydrodynamically foiled one with some lead ballast in it, staying in a closed centerboard case that would be much less obtrusive than the original. I want a shorter cabin, a larger cockpit, a V berth moved forward and a third quarter berth aft. Sitting banks in the cockpit would be raised to deck level. She would get a yawl rig as well. I´d build her in larch with the strip planking method glued and finished with epoxi, clear varnished. Ok, it won´t be a Belouga any more but I think a bit more up to date, preserving in main the looks and good qualities of the original.
